The Pedigree of the Family of Howard Stafford of Mayne, County of Louth, c.1848Family collection

The family parchment

The 1848 pedigree

The family’s manuscript pedigree, titled “Pedigree of the Family of Howard Stafford of Mayne, County of Louth, Ireland”. The family papers say Berkeley Buckingham Smythe Howard Stafford wrote it; he died in August 1847 and the parchment records his death, so someone else at least finished it.

The Howard line runs down the left from Fulco and the Stafford line down the right from Malahulcius. They meet at William Howard, Viscount Stafford, and Mary Stafford, married in 1637, and the descent then runs to Mayne and on to the Patons.

Manuscript transcription: the Howard Stafford "parchment"

Source S01. Transcribed on 26 Sep 2026 from a 2026 photo (sources/original/Howard-Stafford parchment photo (2026).jpg), checked against the 1999 typed layout and scans in S02. According to S03, the author was Berkeley Buckingham Smythe Howard Stafford (1797–1847) of Mayne and 17 French St, Dublin. Square brackets mean the word is lost to a stain or fold; "(S02: …)" gives the 1999 transcriber's reading where it differs or fills a gap.

Readings settled by the 1999 transcription and scans (S02)

  • Edward Smythe Stafford: "of Mayne Esq., died 1802, Grand Chamberlain … and a Colonel in the service of that Duchy" (the Duke of Brunswick's service, per S03).
  • Rev. William H. Stafford: "married first Hannah, widow of Brent Spencer, Esquire, 2ndly to … daughter of … Jones, Glamorganshire(?). S.P. 1808".
  • Lt-Gen Hugh H. Stafford: "Esquire, Lieut. General in the Hon'ble East India Company's Service, died 1819 January".
  • Harriet (Hugh's 2nd wife): "only daughter and child of Lt Col [?] … died [?]". Burke's (S05) names him Lt-Col Spencer.
  • Thomasine: "daughter to Reverend … Sullivan of Clonakilty, [Co.] Cork".
  • Mary Berkeley's father: S02 reads "Theckeley?". The correct place is Spetchley, Worcestershire (S06).
  • Anne Tytler: "died 1832".
  • Edward William Stafford: "of Aldowne, Nelson, New Zealand".
  • Mary Paton: "died 3rd Sept 1823 at Fettehgurh". Both readings give 1823; FamilySearch has 1824.
  • Charles Stewart Paton: S02 reads "born 14th January 1826"; my reading and FamilySearch give the 11th.
  • Letitia's husband: "son of Very Reverend Dean Caulfield of ??? Westmeath".
